Almost everybody in the Asean region knows Toyota Avanza. In Indonesia, Toyota Avanza and its sibling Daihatsu Xenia conquered the top two slot as far as MPV sales is concern overthere. Yet, Toyota is said to feel the heat following the entry of Honda Mobilio and the current slow seller Suzuki Ertiga.
According to iOtomotif, Toyota is developing a real challenger to the aforementioned duo. This means a car based monocoque platform, driving the front wheel drive packaged in the lower car-like vehicle structure. The new MPV will continue to be powered by 1.5L mill which is the favorite lump of the segment. The new MPV will be pitched at a premium position above Toyota Avanza and could be showcased in the next year motorshow.
This is quite surprising as Toyota has a strong follower in this region and they will just buy come what may. For the un-informed, Toyota Avanza utilized separate body and chassis configuration, a configuration adopted in the high volume low cost commercial vehicle, or in the harsher work, a lorry-based platform. That is the reason why it is rear-wheel-driven and has quite a tall body setup with great ground clearance.
This news however is from Indonesia, and could well be valid only for Indonesia, or other market that mirrors the product setup like India for example. In Malaysia, cars like Suzuki Ertiga or Honda Mobilio are not spoken for, and this could well signalled that we are going to stuck with Toyota Avanza for quite some time.
